Engaging on Anti-Bribery and Corruption
Corruption and bribery pose significant risks to companies and their investors, as well as to governments and society as a whole. Every year, corruption losses represent over 5% of global GDP, exceeding $2.6 trillion, while bribes alone exceed $1 trillion. Corruption adds up to 10% to the cost of doing business globally and up to 25% to the cost of procurement contracts in developing countries. Companies embroiled in corruption scandals can suffer from a damaged brand and reputation, exclusion from potential business opportunities, liability to pay hefty fines, and significant diversion of senior management time away from running the business to manage investigations and prosecutions. Investors also risk reputational damage and reduced returns if they invest in companies that are implicated in corruption. Effective implementation of anti-bribery and corruption standards is therefore crucial not only as a risk preventative measure but also to benefit businesses by increasing the size of the market. With new and tougher regulations on anti-bribery and corruption around the world, enforcement is increasingly likely to lead to criminal prosecution and imprisonment for individuals deemed culpable.
